After repeated rumors, the sequel ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ to the horror cult comedy ‘Beetlejuice’ is now actually coming to cinemas. In the first trailer, it immediately becomes apparent that Tim Burton has made an incredibly important decision.
With the mega success of his Netflix series “Wednesday” behind him, Tim Burton has fulfilled his long-cherished dream of a sequel to his dark black-humorous horror farce. He of course brought his congenial lead actor Michael Keaton (“Batman”) on board again as the titular lottery ghost Beetlejuice. However, there is another parallel to the original – and fans of the cult classic should be particularly pleased! But for now, here’s the trailer:
(Almost) Everything is handmade
Tim Burton’s style is simply incomparable. The sets, costumes and masks from the original movie are probably the pinnacle of his unmistakable designs. One could get scared that the memory of the almost entirely handmade original could be sullied by far less impressive computer animations.
But puff cake! In the sequel, the sets were actually built. For the unmistakable ghost effects, the effects artists once again came up with really creative practical ideas instead of simply designing them quickly on the computer.
Other returnees
In addition to Michael Keaton, original stars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara also return for the sequel. On the other hand, Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe and Monica Bellucci, who will embody the wife of Beetlejuice, are new to the cast. Not much is known about the plot itself yet. So maybe the freelance bio-exorcist will be hired once againto haunt a house and drive away the unpleasant inhabitants.
The original “Beetlejuice” was a real box office hit in 1988. Despite its uncompromising weirdness, it made it to number 10 of the most successful movies of the year in the USA. The top three places at the time went to “Roger Rabbit”, “The Prince of Zamunda” and “Good Morning, Vietnam”. Although the second-place comedy was also recently continued by Amazon Prime Video with “The Prince of Zamunda 2”.
The fantasy horror comedy will be released in cinemas on September 6, 2024.
