Margot Robbie seems to be drawn to fantasy worlds in which you can design everything freely. After the mega success of “Barbie”, the star will now produce a computer game film: “The Sims”.
In 2000, gaming company EA released a life simulation game that struck a chord with its variety of options for living a virtual life. In “The Sims” you can freely design your avatars, furnish houses and plan entire cities, tailor life goals, wishes and careers to your characters. If you’re in a morbid mood, you can even let death stop by. With over 200 million games sold, “ The Sims ” is one of the best-selling and most popular computer game series of all time.
The possibilities are endless with The Sims with all the sequels and expansions available to purchase. Now the franchise is set to make its first foray onto the big screen. As Jeff Sneider reports in his industry newsletter The InSneider , a “The Sims” movie is in the works. None other than the “Barbie” star Margot Robbie will produce it with her company LuckyChap.
The Sims: Lots of space for free design
What will the film be about? Of course, that can’t be said yet – plot details are not yet known. “The Sims” doesn’t have an independent plot like many other computer games. It is a simulation that is determined by the player. And in that respect the project is very similar to “ Barbie ”. There is no predetermined narrative there either. Whoever plays with the dolls decides what it’s about. That’s exactly why it was so exciting to see how Margot Robbie and her director Greta Gerwig tackled the topic.
Whether “The Sims” will be a satire like “Barbie”, which takes place in a real and a fantasy world, whether the “ Jumanji ” approach will be followed here, in which players are unexpectedly sucked into a game, it remains to be seen. Or like in the “ LEGO ” films, the characters might experience their very own adventures in their own world. The world is constantly changing thanks to the building blocks. Exactly like the “Sims” world can be transformed at any time.
A director is already on board
By the way, “The Sims” already has a director on board, so the project is not entirely in its infancy. Kate Herron , who directed the first season of the Marvel series “Loki,” will direct “The Sims.” Herron is also writing the screenplay along with Briony Redman, who wrote the script for the short films “Forget Me Not” and “Smear,” among others.
Another producer on board alongside Margot Robbie is Roy Lee. He also produced the successful “The LEGO Movie” and therefore also has experience in making a film from a game without a fixed plot.
It is not yet known when actors will be announced for “The Sims” and when production could begin. And of course there is also the big question: Will Margot Robbie do the honors in front of the camera? That remains to be seen, even if there is currently nothing to indicate this.
Incidentally, another adaptation of a computer game in which a world can be created completely freely is in the works: “ Minecraft ”. The fantasy adventure starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, among others, will be released in cinemas on April 3, 2025.
