With “3 Body Problem”, the “Game Of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were able to adapt one of the greatest sci-fi novels of our time for Netflix. Their almost every wish was fulfilled, but only almost.
One person David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would have liked to win over for an appearance in “3 Body Problem” turned down the offer for an acting cameo: former US President Barack Obama. As Benioff told USA Today, they had asked Obama for an appearance. After all, he is a huge fan of Liu Cixi’s novel and the fact that he is closely connected to Netflix through his production company would certainly have been very helpful. But Obama wrote them back with a humorous rejection:
“If there’s ever a real alien invasion, I should save myself for that crisis.”
A complex mammoth project: This is ‘3 Body Problem’
Based on the book ‘The Three-Body Problem’, the first part of the Trisolaris trilogy, “3 Body Problem” is not only the first series from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss since the end of their fantasy hit “Game Of Thrones”, but an even bigger project Which is why they also have “True Blood” creator Alexander Woo on board as another showrunner. In order to adapt the complex book appropriately, Netflix’s executives were paid a whopping $20 million per episode – significantly more than they were entitled to in the peak days of “Game Of Thrones” (that was $15 million per episode).
After all, the story of an impending alien invasion takes place on different time levels. During the Chinese Cultural Revolution in the 1960s, signals were sent into space and they were answered by aliens on their way to Earth. Among those who know, a battle breaks out, which is still ongoing in the present, as to how to deal with the approaching arrivals.
