As Cersei Lannister, Lena Headey embodied one of the most iconic characters of the hit series Game Of Thrones. However, also because she wanted a different ending for Cersei, the magic of the series is over for the actress.
The fantasy epic ‘Game Of Thrones’ captivated the series world in the 2010s. It was able to completely inspire both fans and critics – at least in the early seasons. It boasts complex worldbuilding and multi-layered characters. This was also due to Cersei Lannister, played by Lena Headey, who always kept the suspense of the story going for seasons with her cunning and unscrupulous nature.
Even though Headey was honored for her acting performance with numerous award nominations and repeatedly stated how much she admired Cersei as a character, the actress was not completely happy with the ending for her series role. Warning, spoilers for the end of ‘Game Of Thrones’ follow!
Lena Headey wanted a showdown between Cersei and Arya Stark
In the final season of “Game Of Thrones”, Cersei Lannister finally died alongside Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) attack on King’s Landing. Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) later found the bodies of the two siblings and lovers in the rubble – an anticlimactic end for these two important figures. Lena Headey had also imagined a different outcome for Cersei, as she revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:
“I think we’ve all thought about it, because you start writing the storyline yourself in your head. I was fantasizing about a showdown between Cersei and Arya. That was our dream. But the show’s creators made different choices.”
Lena Headey’s wish ending for Cersei goes hand in hand with that of many fans, as Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) had the manipulative queen on her death list for seasons. Thus, a showdown between the two would have closed a bow not only for Cersei, but also for Arya.
However, Lena Headey explained that she can still understand why “Game Of Thrones” masterminds David Benioff and D.B. Weiss decided differently. After all, they were under enormous pressure at the end of the series due to the high expectations of fans and participants. For the actress, this chapter is now closed, although she misses working with her co-stars:
“No, I don’t miss it. I miss the people – because you fall in love with the people and form family bonds with them. It takes a certain amount of time to process that. There is a strange way of mourning these relationships. But I don’t miss it. We created this. We’ve put everything into it. It fucking changed everybody’s world, and we’re going to have that forever.”
For this reason, Headey does not watch the prequel series “House Of The Dragon”. Seeing a new series set in this universe is just “too strange” for the Cersei actress.
Fans are currently waiting for the second season of ‘House of the Dragon’ which will start airing on HBO max from Summer 2024.
