In the series sector, “Star Trek” is currently very lively with shows such as “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”. But in the cinema the sci-fi franchise is faltering a bit. Now there is new hope for “Star Trek 4”.
Eight years after “Star Trek: Beyond,” fans of the Enterprise saga are still waiting for a new installment. At times it was unclear whether there would be another part with Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, whether the actors of Kirk, Spock, Uhura and Co. would be replaced or whether a completely new crew would be dared to make a fresh start. It is also quite possible that in the end all variants will come! But first, there’s an update on “Star Trek 4” with Chris Pine.
Starfleet is officially joined by a new screenwriter, and that’s always a good sign that things are moving forward. As reported by Variety, Steve Yockey is now writing the script for an as-yet-untitled “Star Trek 4”. And even if there are no details about the story yet: It is supposed to be the final chapter of the reboot saga. Here Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldaña as Uhura, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, John Cho as Sulu and Simon Pegg as Scotty are involved.
“Star Trek 4” has been running since 2016
Since 2016, there have been repeated attempts to bring this crew together on screen. Most recently with Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) in the director’s chair and a script by Lindsey Beer (“Graveyard of the Cuddly Toys: Bloodlines”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”). These people are no longer involved – but Beer at least gave the positive update in the summer of 2023 that the project was still in progress, but she had to leave due to time constraints.
With Steve Yockey, a new author is now on board, and another attempt can be made. Maybe the stars are aligned this time. Yockey brings experience mainly from the series sector, writing scripts for “Supernatural” and “The Flight Attendant“, among others. He is also the co-creator behind the series with “The Big Bang Theory” star Kaley Cuoco.
Another project from the “Andor” director
But even WITHOUT Captain Kirk and Co., “Star Trek” will soon continue in cinemas. As mentioned above, Paramount is working on many different ways to keep the sci-fi saga going on the big screen. For example, a “Star Trek” project by screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith and director Toby Haynes (“Andor”) is in development. It is set decades before J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot with the Chris Pine crew.
