Crime, love and ska – the intense This Town trailer promises an exciting mix of themes and emotions. The whole thing was created by a proven master of the current series landscape. But it’s best to see for yourself.
In the form of the fascinating gangster saga “Peaky Blinders”, Steven Knight has created one of the best series of recent years. Now the creator, screenwriter and producer is launching his latest creation with “This Town“. Like his previous hit title, it’s set in the past of the city where Knight has spent most of his life: Birmingham.
For the series creator, this is a project that he claims in an interview was an even more personal affair for him than “Peaky Blinders”. Knight describes “This Town” as his kind of love letter to the entire region around Birmingham and neighbouring Coventry. The story is set in an era he truly loved. It’s populated by characters that feel close to him as if he grew up with them. The six one-hour episodes were directed by Paul Whittington, who has also directed various episodes of “The Crown” recently.
“This Town” launched on BBC One in the UK on March 31, 2024. We don’t know yet when and on which streaming service we will be able to watch it in other countries.
Some of the leading roles include Michelle Dockery, who became world-famous for her appearances in “Downton Abbey” and the Guy Ritchie film “The Gentlemen”, Levi Brown (“Payback”), Jordan Bolger from “The Book of Boba Fett”, David Dawson (“The Last Kingdom”) and Nicholas Pinnock from seasons 1 and 2 of “Top Boy”.
That’s what This Town trailer is about:
According to a press release from the BBC and also the trailer, “This Town” is a large-scale drama that tells the story of four young people who are drawn into the world of ska and two-tone music. The scene around bands that are still popular today, such as The Specials, The Beat or The Selecter, emerged in Birmingham and Coventry in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The new music backa then was fed by traditional Jamaican ska as well as influences from punk and new wave.
But it’s not just about music. According to the broadcaster, the series will be both an intense thriller and a kind of family saga. The whole thing is set in 1981 against the backdrop of the ongoing social unrest in the UK back then. In the midst of this scenario, a group of teenagers struggle to find their individual path into adult life. Some of them – at least that’s what the trailer suggests – probably get on the wrong track.
